Pause

How often have you wished that life came with a ‘pause’ button? A chance to freeze frame the action, really take a look at what is happening and think through your response, before pressing ‘play’. The account of the creation of our world and universe, as described in the book of Genesis, tells us that God pressed the pause button on day six “… and he rested on the seventh day from all his work which he had made.” [Genesis 2:2].

Pause…….Stop…….Take a deep breath. Your thoughts rush around your head like butterflies released into a meadow in full bloom. Gather them. Capture them. Lay them aside.

Pause…….Stop…….Take a deep breath. Your senses are constantly bombarded – their attention fought over like dogs wrestling with a bone. Shield them. Protect them. Re-tune your senses.

Pause…….Stop…….Take a deep breath. Breathe in the aroma of His presence. Feel the caress of His breath on your face. Be still and know the intimacy of your God.

We need to recapture the Divine purpose of pausing. It is not merely a chance to catch our breath, before ploughing on again. The Divine purpose of pausing is to have the opportunity to breathe deeply. Slow and Low. To ruminate on what we have just experienced. To take the information and experiences that our senses are giving us and to sift it through the sieve of the Holy Spirit. This is Divine mindfulness and meditation. It is not an emptying of the mind and spirit. It is a conscious filtering of everything, in order to be filled with that which is true; honest; just; pure; lovely; admirable; excellent and praiseworthy [Philippians 4: 8].
